Two of the young scholars and their familes of who won the Teen Writing Contest

Green Valley 8th grader and Early College 11th grader submitted creative original works

Fairfield, CA (January 14, 2026) – We’re thrilled to announce that two of our students have been named winners in the 2025 Solano County Library Teen Writing Contest, celebrating outstanding young writers from across the region! Sponsored annually by the Solano County Library, the contest invites local teens ages 12–18 to submit original and unpublished creative works in short story and poetry categories. Winners are chosen based on creativity, originality, style, grammar, and overall impact.

Selah Olivia Poblete – 8th Grade, Green Valley Middle School

Selah’s poetry was selected as one of the winners in the Poetry category for Things You Said Too Quietly (In The Static). Her work captures the beauty and complexity of communication, reflection, and the subtle ways we express emotion and thought.

“Writing has always been an output for me, and so it has always reflected my life, the things around me, and the things I feel,” said Selah. She added that this contest is a key reason she fell in love with writing, and has entered it multiple times. “I have improved [my writing] since I first entered the sixth grade, and a large majority of that has to do with my teachers at Green Valley. From even my first year, my teachers saw and nourished my passion for writing.”

Selah has a remarkable ability to express deep emotion through her words,” said Principal Steve Trotter of Green Valley Middle School. “Her creativity and unique voice are inspiring, and we’re thrilled to see her recognized for a remarkable piece of artistic expression.”

Vaanya Tiwari – 11th Grade, Early College High School

Vaanya earned top honors in the Short Story category for her compelling piece Who Am I: the Voice of a Teen Discovering Me. In this thoughtful narrative, she explores cultural identity and personal growth, drawing on her own experiences as she navigates the challenges of belonging and self-understanding in a diverse world. Her writing resonated with judges for its emotional depth, vivid voice, and powerful message about embracing uniqueness.

“I decided to enter the Solano Library Teen Writing Contest because writing allows me to reflect on my experiences and give meaning to moments of growth,” Vaanya said. “This story reflects the journey many teens take as they navigate identity, culture, and belonging. I hope readers feel understood and encouraged to embrace who they are with pride.”

“Vaanya’s writing reflects not only exceptional talent but a thoughtful perspective that encourages readers to reflect on their own journeys. She represents our school with excellence,” said Early College High Principal John Pizzo.

Both students join a distinguished group of young writers whose work will be showcased by the Solano County Library, inspiring readers of all ages while celebrating the literary talents emerging in our community. Winners also receive a prize and recognition from the library as part of this exciting contest.

“These achievements reflect the strength of our district’s commitment to nurturing creativity and honoring student voices,” said Superintendent Jennifer Sachs. “Competitions like the Teen Writing Contest help foster confidence, critical thinking, and expression. These young writers showcase the thoughtful perspectives and powerful voices being developed in our schools.”

We encourage the community to join us in congratulating Vaanya and Selah on this impressive achievement – we’re proud of their creativity, courage, and contribution to the arts!
